New cycle route gives access to Faughan Valley

29 August 2008

A new cycle route has been opened in the Faughan Valley area of County Londonderry, it has been announced.

Cycling charity Sustrans explains that the facility is made up of three circular routes along quiet country roads that link the city of Derry to the nearby villages of Park, Newbuildings, Eglinton and Claudy, as well as the surrounding countryside.

Ross McGill, sustainable transport officer at the organisation, states that the quiet and flat roads of the region, as well as the varied scenery it provides, means the region is an ideal location for people to spend time.

"The completion of the Faughan Valley project and the publication of the Faughan Valley free leaflet and map gives tourists and locals alike the opportunity to take to two wheels and enjoy three new safe, attractive and signposted routes," he adds.

In recent days, Sustrans urged the Welsh assembly government to introduce 20 miles per hour zones in all urban areas in order to improve road safety.
