Ospreys take flight for the winter

27 August 2008

A pair of osprey chicks have taken flight from their nest in the Caledonian pine wood at Loch Garten for their 3,000-mile journey to west Africa, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has announced.

Furthermore, the organisation explains that twitchers can log on to the RSPB website to see how the two feathered friends are getting on.

Richard Thaxton, RSPB Loch Garten Visitor Centre manager, explains: "These innovations have proved hugely popular, with the nestcam alone receiving a phenomenal 200 000 unique visitors this year.

"We hope that the birds do make it to west Africa - and for the first time ever we'll know whether or not they have."

Deshar and Nethy - named after two local primary schools - set off last week and the body notes that the pair are both making progress towards their final destination.

Both reached the south of England in recent days and have been travelling at speeds of up to 35 mile per hour, meaning it will take them between four and five weeks to reach their goal.
