UK roads to receive enhancements

26 March 2008

Roads in a number of regions around the British Isles are due to receive an upgrade, it has been announced.

Highways in the Isle of Wight, Hounslow and Sheffield will benefit from a £1.19 billion private finance initiative which could reduce the chances of drivers needing to make a car or caravan insurance claim.

Transport minister Rosie Winterton explains that better quality roads mean safer and quicker journeys, adding that the new funding will benefit all users, including caravan users, pedestrians and cyclists.

"Communities with better roads also attract significant new investment, helping to boost local economies," she adds.

The local authorities will now draw up outline business cases for the projects and work on the improvements is scheduled to begin in 2011.

Meanwhile, the department recently announced new anti-fraud measures are to be introduced for disabled drivers, explaining that Blue Badge passes will be issued in tamper-proof casings to prevent them being interfered with.
