Diesel vehicles reach new market record

09 May 2008

Diesel-powered vehicles have reached their highest monthly market share on record, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The SMMT's registration figures for cars in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland for April indicate that the diesel market share now stands at 45 per cent, with the Ford Focus identified as the top-selling model.

Paul Everitt, chief executive of the organisation, comments: "The motor industry has invested in a wide variety of new technologies and exciting designs to ensure motorists have a wide choice and can continue to maintain their mobility, save money and reduce their carbon foot-print."

In news that may be of interest to car insurance customers, the demand for vehicles that are powered by alternative fuels was also shown to have increased, with a rise of 8.4 per cent over the course of the month.

The SMMT aims to address major issues that affect the motor industry, including sustainability, legislation and globalisation.
