Lake District set to gain new conservation area

28 May 2008

The Lake District looks ready to gain a new conservation area in the form of the village of Helton, located near the north-east boundary of the National Park.

Following a month-long consultation period, no major objections were lodged against plans to give the rural community its new status.

A report from Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA) adviser David James asserts that the designation of the village as a conservation area would help to preserve its character.

Notable features of the locale include extensive valley views, field patterns of medieval strip farming and six listed buildings of special historic and architectural character.

"The designation also enables us to consider further measures to prevent the loss of historic features," he explains.

At present, the LDNPA has 21 conservation areas.

Those touring the Lake District may be happy to hear that a number of information centres in the region are to be given a facelift worth around £100,000.
