'No substitute' for professional driving lessons

16 May 2008

There is no substitute for thorough professional driving tuition, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

In a statement issued today, the organisation states that parents eager to help their children with practice behind the wheel can help to make the process less intimidating and potentially reduce the likelihood of them having to make a car insurance claim in the future.

However, the IAM states that if parents want to help teach their kids to drive then they will need to brush up on their own driving skills.

It advises them to sit in the back seat of the car when their youngster has their first few driving lessons but to say nothing and simply take everything in.

"That way you can see and hear for yourself what the professional instructor is advising and make sure that you reinforce those messages when you are helping on practice drives," it adds.

In related news, the British Insurance Brokers' Association recently announced that a new enforcement agency will be launched in 2009 to help deal with the two million uninsured motorists on the UK's roads.
