Plans in place to deal with uninsured motorists

15 May 2008

A new enforcement agency will be launched next year by the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) and the government.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at Biba, explains that the new agency will aim to crack down on the two million motorists who currently use Britain's road without a car insurance policy.

He suggests that innocent motorists pay more than £400 million per year because of uninsured drivers.

Mr Trudgill explains that the agency will compare the Motor Insurance Database with the Vehicle Registration Database and send a penalty notice to anyone who does not have any cover in place.

"If they don’t get insurance then they will have their car seized. There's a big drive coming next year to stop uninsured drivers," he concludes.

A report by the Motor Insurers' Bureau from September 2007 indicated that uninsured motorists were six times more likely to be driving an unsafe vehicle than honest, insured road users.
