It is crucial for motorists not to reveal they have a satellite navigation devices to other drivers, one expert advises.
Simply leaving a visible ring in the car window can draw attention to a vehicle, says Vince Yearly, spokesperson for the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), with people often making this mistake when they remove their device.
"What we also recommend is that you do not put something like home into the satnav," he continues, adding that this will give others information as to where you live.
The IAM states that people must use the audible instruction to guide them to avoid getting distracted.
Furthermore, the organisation advises that the unit is removed before leaving the vehicle as insurance cover may be invalid if reasonable precautions have not been taken to reduce the risk of theft.
Having a map is also crucial as back up, IAM adds.
