UK holidays 'will always remain popular'

03 October 2008

A market for UK holidays will always remain, tour operator AITO has said.

Its chairman, Derek Moore, said that despite the credit crunch, holidays at home - potentially including caravanning - would always be popular.

He said that people are seeking short breaks within the UK and that such weekends away are not being affected by the economic downturn.

"There will always be a market for domestic holidays and there are some great cities in the UK," he asserted, citing places such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester.

UK residents made 11.9 million overnight trips within Britain in May, according to the VisitBritain update of the UK Tourism Survey in that month.

This was an increase of seven per cent from May 2007, or 2.6 million more trips.

In England, there were 9.7 million domestic overnight trips, a ten per cent rise on the figure from May 2007.

Nights and expenditure increased by seven per cent and 18 per cent respectively.
