With a diesel engine and estate car bodywork this car was last year’s competition winner; this year’s hatchback had 2.0-litre petrol power. It’s a very free-revving engine and a bit ‘top-endy’ with maximum power and torque at 6500 and 4000rpm respectively, with the result that 5th and 6th gears are a bit superfluous when towing and you have to be careful on hill starts.
High marks for handbrake performance and load-carrying ability, however, and you can’t fault the fit and finish of this good-value contender.
