A lot of the comments about the petrol-driven X-Trail in the lower price category apply, but the diesel engine produces more torque at low speed so getaways are more confident – though the front wheels still spun on our 14% gradient. At high speed I felt the diesel X-Trail was more assured than the petrol version, though even then it felt wobbly at times. Six-speed gearbox is nice and the handbrake works well.
