A bit plain and functional, the Caddy Maxi Life’s biggest problem was wheelspin on the hill starts, though it did have to cope with a damp track. On the high-speed circuit it achieved average marks for stability but at low speed the ride deteriorated.
Third gear was fine for going up the 14% gradient but 4th, 5th and 6th seemed a bit too high. The handbrake worked well enough but needed a really strong tug to hold on the 17% slope. Our caravanability judges praised the Caddy for its good stance when hitched and for the helpful towing information supplied by Volkswagen in the handbook. Both audible and visual warnings tell of any caravan bulb failure.
