Accelerates like a rocket and brakes safely to a halt, at which point the handbrake works confidently. Unfortunately, in between starting and stopping I wasn’t always happy with the Astra’s road manners and it wasn’t too happy to restart on the 17% hill. No problem with traction, but the clutch slipped. Like most Vauxhalls the Astra has a sensible noseweight limit – 75kg.
