Past members wanting to use CL sites

Over the last few days we have had a number of calls from folks wanting to stay on our CL. When we have asked them for their membership number to make a booking, they then state we left the Club last year.  At this we refuse to take their booking, and some get most upset saying other CL's welcome them and we reply that we could lose our licence if we allow non-members to stay, and we are not prepared to do that. It concerns me that we are not in the handbook, but they must be gettting on the Club website to get our details, yet they are not prepared to pay their membership fees.

Hi David, unfortunately there is nothing we can do to stop non members contacting you but you are doing the right thing by stopping them from booking and would like to think other CLs are following this rule. A non member cannot see your address details on the website, they have to log in as a member to do that, however if they were a member they may have picked up details at that time via the magazine or the web, or they may still have a friend who is a member. Hopefully they will see what they are missing and come back and join us and can make a legitimate stay at your CL. Natasha

Sat Nav POIs are pretty much freely available and contain enough information to locate and contact a CL owner. In my experience very, very few CL owners bother to check membership. This is well publicised on the web and I suspect a fair number using CLs are not in fact members. With good CLs becoming very popular there needs to be a tightening up of CL usage. Perhpas the Club should take a leaf out of the National Trust's book and issue an annual sticker to members for display in a window of their vans. At least it would allow members to discretely check on other occupants on a CL and report abuse??? This very fact might well deter owners from accepting non members.

Write your comments here... Good idea, but could the sticker be in the tow car window, as my folding caravan's windows are all neatly folded away inside when I am towing it!

Write your comments here... Is there no limit to how tight people can be? I suppose there isn't!  Surely the services of the Caravan Club are worth the annual membership fee?! Couldn't CLs which fail to check membership details and so allow non members to use them be given a warning first time, then made to close down for repeat offences? This would make 'dodgy' CLs come into line.

The Broads Authority deals with boat users who try to steal the use of the waterway facilities- as a navigation ranger's boat approaches, the staff can use binoculars to read the boat's registration number, put it into the computer, find out if you have paid for the current year, and if not, are ready to stop you and sort you out by the time you approach.

The caravan club used to send a sticker with the year shown (if I remember correctly).Unfortunately these stickers were designed to stick on the inside of the caravan window (they still do this for number of years membership). These stickers react with plastic windows and cause irrepairable damage. So ...re.introduce annual membership stickers with the advice to use on towcar and not in the caravan!!   Simples!!!!

It would be far better displayed in the vehicle being left on the CL. I am sure in this day and age there is a sticker which does not react with caravan plastic windows. The National Trust one is the same size as a tax disk and is not adhesive but is made from a material which clings to the inside of my car window. It is easily removed. They change the colour every year and also include the year in large figures on it. The colour makes it obvious from a distance as to which year it is valid for.

New stickers could easily be issued with changes in the handbook.

Write your comments here...These stickers used to be different colours each year.Self adhesive vynle will always react on plastic windows!Perhaps a peice of paper with sellotape would do the job!not!!!!! The stickers could howver be affixed to the A frame cover on caravans and the windscreen on motorhomes.
