Mobile phone laws being ignored, stats show

Published: 08 February 2010

It seems that people are not taking heed of the law when it comes to using their mobile phones behind the wheel.

This is the conclusion reached by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) after analysing the latest data from the Department for Transport.

Since the last survey was undertaken in September 2008, it has been found that the percentage of motorists using their mobile phone while driving has increased from 1.1 per cent to 1.4 per cent.

Neil Greig, the IAM's director of policy and research, commented: "It is clear that, despite wide publicity on the risks, people are still choosing to ignore advice and use their phones in their cars."

He suggested that more needs to be done to educate drivers about the risks associated with failing to make use of their hands-free kits.

This follows recent advice from the IAM which said people should be careful about where they store their cars, as this will lower car insurance premiums.
