A38 slip road improvements 'to prevent skids'

Published: 12 March 2010

A "greatly improved" road surface could make sure that great days out go without any slip-ups for users of one A38 slip road.

The northbound exit at Willington is to be resurfaced in order to reduce the risk of skids, helping to ensure driver and passenger safety on the road.

Project manager Paul Davis comments: "To minimise disruption we are carrying out these works during off-peak hours and overnight.

"Drivers are reminded to take care through roadworks and allow extra time for their journeys."

Skids are caused when the force acting on tyres due to the motion of the vehicle - both its speed and its turning - overcome the friction between the wheels and the road.

To recover the skid, the driver must turn in the same direction, increasing the traction of the vehicle's wheels.

In a straight skid, excessive acceleration or braking can be counteracted by easing off of the appropriate pedal gradually, allowing motorists to continue safely on their way to enjoying great days out across the country.
