Bristol welcomes more walking, cycle paths

Published: 11 March 2010

Attempts to cut the number of car journeys made in Bristol and the surrounding areas have been met with praise.

Sustainable transport charity Sustrans revealed that in the areas of Brislington and Knowle, trips have fallen by 11 per cent since April last year.

This is due to an increase in provisions for walkers and cyclists, giving people more eco-friendly options of how to travel.

Lizzie Thal-Jantzen, Sustrans' project officer, commented: "With the right information and support, walking, cycling or getting on a bus or train can become the easiest and quickest ways of getting around, not to mention having positive benefits for people's health."

She said that the scheme had received great support in this particular part of the country and that plans are afoot to roll it out elsewhere.

This follows the recent announcement that Sustrans was targeting Shropshire with its latest campaign to get people more active.
