More people are opting to take great days out within the UK as they try to lower their carbon footprints, according to regional development agency One North East.
With climate issues firmly on the agenda for many Britons, the organisation reports a growing trend for short breaks to be taken by domestic travellers, rather than long-haul flights and lengthy overseas trips.
One North East's business performance coordinator Janet Cummings says: "As this tourism trend grows it's vital for north-east England to be known nationally as a place that offers a high-quality, ethical and green experience for visitors.
Tourism operators in the region are now being urged to offer great days out to visitors that are also kind to the environment, helping them to make the most of the £4 billion that the industry contributes to the north-east economy each year.
Among the recent eco-friendly developments in the region that could be of use to touring enthusiasts is the installation of electric vehicle charging points at Hadrian's Wall.
