Variable speed limits could make M20 safer

Plans to introduce variable speed limits on the M20 could make touring safer during periods of heavy traffic on the road.
The Highways Agency has proposed the introduction of variable limits on the motorway, following a similar scheme in place on the M25.
After its introduction, the number of accidents on the M25 was seen to fall - although the Association of British Drivers argues that this may be due to some less serious incidents going unreported.
However, the plans for the M20 could provide further support for variable speed limits, which are used to control the flow of traffic by slowing vehicles as they approach congested zones.
Touring enthusiasts who have faced fast-moving traffic in congested conditions in the past may welcome the development and its potential to enforce slower limits at peak times.
At present, the speed limit for cars towing caravans on motorways in the UK is 60 mph - ten miles per hour slower than the cars using the roads without towing anything.
