Ferry crossings 'a green way to travel'

Caravanners hoping for an eco-friendly holiday should consider a ferry crossing as part of their trip, it has been suggested.
Richard Hammond, chief executive and founder of greentraveller.co.uk, emphasised that in many respects it is the "greenest way you can get to continental Europe".
He said that taking a ferry is often more of a travelling experience for holidaymakers as they are able to take in more of their surroundings than by other means of transport.
"[On] the Brittany trip to northern Spain, you can actually sit and have a meal and look out and the crossing across to northern Spain is one of the best places to see whales and dolphins," Mr Hammond explained.
For people who live especially near ports, travelling by ferry is also likely to be one of the most convenient ways to get to a European destination, he added.
Over the August bank holiday, it seemed that many people decided to stay in the UK for a break, with VisitBritain figures estimating that 11.9 million would holiday at home.
