Winchester to host Heritage Open Days

Published: 06 September 2010

Walkers touring Winchester over the next two weeks may be interested in a range of Heritage Open Days being hosted across the city.

Free tours, events and activities may provide a perfect complement to the walking schedules arranged by caravanners staying nearby.

Visitors will be provided with exclusive free access to a number of fascinating buildings that are usually closed, between September 9th and 12th.

Highlights include a rare chance to see the steam-powered Southwick Brewhouse in action and free entry to the Royal Green Jackets Museum, where visitors can have a go at firing a Baker Rifle.

Winchester City Council portfolio holder for economic prosperity Dominic Hiscock said: "Many residents are also keen to rediscover the history on their doorstep and with free entry there really is no excuse not to get out and start exploring.

"I can't wait to visit some of the buildings that have intrigued me for years but I have never had the opportunity to visit."

Winchester is among the historic British cities that feature in a new iPhone app launched last month, by Cool Places, designed to keep those touring the famous destinations informed about things to do and see.

Caravanners can download the software and gain exclusive access to a new travel guide series, which includes information on Bath, Cambridge, Canterbury and Durham, among others.
