Be aware of frost jackings this winter

Published: 21 December 2011

Motorists are warned to keep an eye on their vehicles this winter, as there has been a recent spate of so-called frost jackings all over the country.

Such incidents occur when a car is left to defrost itself with the engine running, giving thieves the perfect opportunity to take it for themselves.

One of the main problems is making a claim on car insurance, as the majority of companies won't pay out if you've left the key in the ignition.

Tracker's police relationships manager Stuart Chapman explained that people wouldn't leave an open briefcase containing £30,000 of cash outside, so the same approach should be taken with a car.

"We're urging car owners to use common sense, especially on cold mornings, when thieves could be looking for an opportunity to steal a car from under your nose," he commented.

Other advice from the company is to avoid leaving valuable items on show over the festive period, as these will also entice thieves.
