Try Northern Spain this summer

There's nothing quite like a caravan holiday overseas. You get the same benefits that you would exploring the UK by caravan – a unique experience of the landscape, the sense of freedom – while enjoying another country's culture and, of course, weather.

This year, one area that you might like to explore is northern Spain. Typically, it is southern Spain and its islands that attract the most attention from Britons in search of some guaranteed sunshine. However, according to travel expert Simon Calder, there are plenty of treasures to be found further north.

He highlighted Barcelona as a holiday hotspot, and said it was "perhaps the perfect European city break". This is quite a compliment when you consider how many amazing cities Europe is fortunate enough to be home to.

"You have got the cutting edge culture from the Picasso Museum and the amazing architecture of Antoni Gaudi. You have the beach which very, very few big European cities can offer and great food and drink.

"From the point of view of many, if you can't find it in Barcelona you're probably better off without it," he said.

Of course, Barcelona is not the only gem in the north of Spain. San Sebastian, for example, is well worth a visit if only for the food. With so many Michelin starred restaurants competing with each other, the standard of dining that you can enjoy here is truly exceptional. Plus, the beach culture here is very lively and appealing.

Northern Spain as a whole is a really fascinating place to explore, and a beautiful part of the world. That's why so many people native to Spain choose the region for their own holidays. Overall, it boasts a stunning coastline, exciting towns and cities and some of the most breathtaking landscape you will ever see in the mountains of the Pyrenees and the Asturias.
