First official stretch of national coast opened in Weymouth

Published: 27 January 2012

The first official stretch of national coast path has been opened in Weymouth Bay as part of a plan for a continuous coastal path in England.

Environment minister Richard Benyon approved the route from Rufus Castle to Lulworth Cove, which will improve access to 32 kilometres of the British coastline.

Walking group The Ramblers has reacted positively to the news that preliminary steps have been taken towards providing an uninterrupted coastal path.

Justin Cooke, the Ramblers' senior policy officer, said: "This is a great day for walkers everywhere as we see the first steps towards our vision of a continuous English coastal path become a reality."

A completed Welsh coastal path is due to be launched in May, and will make Wales the first country in the world to have a continuous coastal path.

It is likely to improve tourism in the area, as well as provide a boost in the health of the local community, who will be able to use it for walking and cycling.

The Ramblers are calling for the government to continue with similar developments in England, so that the country can enjoy the same benefits.
