Documents required

If you are stopped by the police in any country, you will need to prove that the vehicle(s) belong to you (or that you have permission to drive/use them), they are in a road worthy condition, and they are insured. You will need to produce the following documentation (originals not photocopies):

Your vehicle

Car or motorhome

  • Insurance certificate
  • MOT certificate if the vehicle is over 3 years old
  • V5C document (log book)

Caravan

  • Insurance certificate
If you have a CRIS document then it would be advisable to carry this as well, even though it is not a legal requirement to do so.

Required documents

Driving Licence

  • All driving licences issued in the UK are legal to use in EU countries
  • International Driving Permits (IDPs) can be obtained from selected Post Offices, The AA and the RAC.

Note

if you have an all green licence issued before 1991 which does not conform to EU standards or have a pictorial representation of what you are allowed to drive/tow we would strongly recommend that you change this for a photo-card licence or carry an International Driving Permit, due to problems with translation.

Passports

  • Passport information can be found at www.passport.gov.uk or telephone 0300 222 000.
  • It is a good idea to have six month's validity on your passport in case your return journey is delayed.
  • Each country has specific rules and regulations regarding passport validity, and entry requirements please see www.fco.gov.uk or telephone 0845 850 2829

Recommended documents

CCI - Camping Card International

  • Nearly all campsites in Europe will accept a CCI card instead of your passport when you check-in at reception, it also provides public liability insurance.
  • A CCI card is included in our Red Pennant travel insurance, or can be bought on its own for £5.50, by calling 01342 336633.

EHIC - European Health Insurance Card

  • Cards can be obtained from www.ehic.org.uk or by calling 0845 606 2030.
  • The EHIC card allows you to obtain reciprocal state-provided emergency health care in all EU states.
  • Carry a few photocopies of this document as it may be retained by a hospital or clinic where assistance has been requested.

Notes

Only basic emergency cover is included and it is strongly recommended that additional travel insurance, such as The Caravan Club's Red Pennant travel insurance is also taken out.

General insurance advice

Car / motorhome

  • Green cards (for motor insurance) are no longer a legal requirement for travelling in EU countries.

Contact your car / motorhome insurance company to:

  • Check that you are covered for the countries you are planning to visit.
  • Check if there is a limit to how long you can stay overseas.

Caravan

Contact your caravan insurance company to:

  • Check that you are covered for the countries you are planning to visit.
  • Check if there is a limit to how long you can stay overseas.

Notes

The Caravan Club 5c's insurance policy includes 180 days European cover.

Although your insurance policies may cover you to tour overseas, they will not necessarily cover the cost of repatriation back to the UK. Our Red Pennant travel insurance covers continuation of holiday and full repatriation back to your home.
