Embracing horse riding

Riding a horse can seem a daunting prospect for those who have never tried it before. A one-to-one lesson with a horse called Archie was all Andrew Ditton needed to overcome his equine anxiety.

Choosing the right riding centre

I must admit to having a healthy fear of horses. I appreciate that they are beautiful and intelligent creatures, but it is that intelligence combined with their size and power that somewhat intimidates me.

When looking for a place where I could learn to ride, research was done in a very, very careful manner. Luckily it didn’t take long to find a perfect option. 

Washington Riding Centre

Washington Riding Centre is a great option because they:

  • provide riding lessons for children and adults with disabilities.
  • offer reasonably priced lessons or courses for those without disabilities.
  • ensure revenue goes straight back into the running of the centre.
  • provide beginner sessions on a one-to-one basis and group sessions.

Be aware that there is a weight limit in place to protect the horses (14 stone for able-bodied riders and 12 stone for people with disabilities).

Getting started

In trepidation I had my hat fitting and followed Tracy, my instructor. The sight of a raised platform eased my fears about getting on the horse.

I was led to Archie – specially chosen as he's a docile equine. When on the saddle, Archie was gently led away and my riding gear was adjusted to fit perfectly. 

Meanwhile, Archie was attached to a guide rope held by Tracy, so there was no danger of him trotting away. It felt a little strange to be astride such a broad beast.

Amazing Archie

We gently started walking around the area's perimeter. Then it became a brief trot and I was delighted to stand up in the stirrups, bobbing with the horse's movements.

Archie adapted perfectly. Soon the lead rope was detached and I was alone at the controls, albeit with my mentor prompting me when needed.

We then went around the arena in circles and figure of eights, and also walked straight down the middle.

More than pleasantly surprised

I was utterly amazed at how much I improved during just half an hour’s session with an experienced training horse.

I had a great time and can see why people get addicted to horse riding. There is something magical about working in unison with such a special animal.

What a marvellous, uplifting place the Washington Riding Centre is. No matter what your ability or your age, I would recommend everyone to give it a go.

Stay at Club’s Durham Grange which is around 15 minutes journey to Washington Riding Centre by car.

  • There is free parking in the yard and there are no height barriers- if it’s big enough for horse lorries, it’s big enough for an A-Class!
