Why stay here ...

Update for members - this CL is under new ownership as of June 2019.

South Whittlieburn Farm is perfectly situated in the picturesque Brisbane Glen 2.5 miles north east of Largs, a renowned seaside resort, which retains local character and charm whilst having a considerable range of amenities offering a perfect location for long and short stay holiday visitors.

Largs has many attractions, including the award winning Vikingar centre, which celebrates the town's historic Viking connections. There is also a swimming pool and fitness centre and the world famous Nardini's ice-cream parlour and cafe nearby.

Other local attractions include Largs Yacht Haven with Scott's Bar and Restaurant, and regular ferry connections from Largs Pier to Great Cumbrae and Weymss Bay to the Isle of Bute. Kelburn Castle and Estate (1.4 miles) has a wide range of activities including mountain biking, adventure courses and the Kelburn Glen waterfall and deep gorge walks.

Largs is also home of the Sport Scotland national Sports Centre at Inverclyde with facilities for all sports up to professional level and the sailing offshoot on the Isle of Cumbrae.

The town is well situated for easy access to Glasgow, about 31 miles, via the A737/M8 or using the regular train service from Largs Station.

The Ayrshire coastline is renowned for its range of outdoor activities including golf courses, which include Royal Troon, Prestwick, Turnberry and Largs. In addition to Largs Golf Club there is also a municipal course at Routenburn. There is a popular racecourse in Ayr, and for yachting enthusiasts, some of the best sailing in the West Coast of Scotland.

The site itself is on a small family run farm which offers a lovely vibrant feel. There is also a livery yard so horses graze happily in the neighbouring fields and in the spring there are young lambs and foals playing in this idyllic spot. We have recently introduced free range hens and so eggs may be available if you require!

There are beautiful walks nearby and the wildlife and flora are stunning. Every one remarks on the gorgeous setting and the warm welcome that you will receive.

We look forward to you enjoying our little haven!

Pleasant one night stop

South Whittlieburn Farm
We only stayed 1 night in motorhome. CL is in field over road from farmhouse where I was pleasantly greeted and shown around. The CL is all stone chippings near level pitches 2 to the side and 3 alongside road hedge. The road was a quiet country lane just low level of occasional traffic. The water was and refuse close by. There were 2 self contained toilet shower wet rooms. But these were shared by the other camping fields of which there were 3 or 4. At our time of visit which was a Sunday night there were probably 10 of various others in motorhomes and campervans and tents in the other fields. But it didn't affect us. The CL was full that night. Would visit again.

Nice site location but...

South Whittlieburn Farm
A nice site, but was somewhat disappointed with the layout and facilities, which is why I've only given it 3 stars. The pitches are all hardstanding on concrete and gravel on a slope, but this meant we were not very close to any grass or shade and it felt like parking on a gravel pit. There are no facilities for grey waste, other than the chemical waste, which is tucked away near the house. The chemical waste is not very hygienic, and is not enclosed - also it is shared with a number of other fields full of caravans and motorhomes (not CL). Additionally, as we were not near any hedges we were unable to water the shrubs with our grey waste. We were told that we could empty our grey waste in another field - not very convenient. If this had been a cheap site (£10-£15) I would not have complained but at £23 I expected a bit better. It is not a CL I would visit again!

A Cracking Spot

South Whittlieburn Farm
We booked this as it was a convenient spot for us to use as a base for the 5 Ferries cycle ride that we planned to do. The owner was really friendly and she went out of her way to make sure our van and that of our friends could be pitched adjacent to each other, which helped make our stay even better. There are other campsites on adjacent land but there was no noise and the whole place had a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The facilities were very clean and the pitch we were on was level with an EHU conveniently positioned. I've read of criticism about midges and fast cars on the road. Yes, midges are around but that's something to be expected in the summer on the West Coast of Scotland and the road is a country lane and we didn't notice it being used as a racetrack. All in all we would go back to this site when touring in Scotland.

Do not stay. This is not a CL. There are too many other camping fields. We were put in the car park for the tents.

South Whittlieburn Farm
This site comprises an area marked as a CMC cl site for 5 vehicles across the road from the farmhouse. When we were there, there were also tents pitched in the middle grass area of the cl. There was also a vehicle area next to this and back across the road next to the farm house is a car park with 2 large camping fields next to that. This makes it quite a large campsite not a cl. Both camping fields were full with a large group of about 60 people in the bottom field. They were noisy until well after midnight. We booked on the day we stayed and were told we could have hard standing as the grass was too wet for a motorhome. What we weren't told was that we would be parked on the sloping gravel car park jammed in with three other motorhomes and all the campers' cars. It did not feel safe being so cramped and was uncomfortably sloping, even with levellers. We would not have booked if we had known all of that. Also we were charged £25 despite the CMC site quoting the charge as £20. We like cls because of their location and peace and quiet. This site certainly isn't quiet and is not a cl. The large group in the bottom field were very noisy and we were kept awake by them. We were also kepy awake by a couple in a nearby tent having a screaming row until 1am and then again at 4.30am. From 6.30am there was a lot of vehicle doorbanging, loud talking and engine revving so overall we slept very badly. Had the motorhomes not been squeazed in so tightly we may not have been disturbed by this as we would not have been so close. If you are looking for a typical cl avoid this like the plague. We certainly will never be back nor will we recommend it to anyone.

Great location and excellent service

South Whittlieburn Farm
On arrival we were met by the owner Katie, she directed us onto the CL field which was over the road from the farm, but still close to the toilet and shower blocks which were kept spotlessly clean. Katy is trying to establish a business at the farm that has a number of camping fields catering for tents, motorhomes and caravans. One of the fields is a dedicated CL site. There is a bit more going on than at a stand alone CL, but is was still quiet especially at night. There were no midgies while we were there, but if there had been its nothing to do with the campsite - its Scotland..... Locally there is easy ferry access to Bute and Great Cumbrae - both good locations for cycling as the ferry companies don't charge for bikes, just the passenger. Our pitch was level on hardstanding with EHU and water nearby, so was exactly what a CL should be. The shower and loo block was the additional benefit which justified the pitch fee. we would happily go back in the future and wish Katy all the best in her efforts to build a business as she works so hard make people welcome and provide good facilities.
