Situated in the Welsh region of Monmouthshire on the River Wye, Chepstow lies adjacent to the border with England and is a fascinating place for anyone who likes history.
Its castle was constructed around a year after the Battle of Hastings and the imposing building with its great towers are well worth a look around. There is also Chepstow Museum within a Georgian townhouse, which tells the story of the area's past in detail.
You won't want to miss the stone wall and its main gates either, where visiting merchants would be charged a toll to get in (fortunately, that's no longer the case).
Shopping is an enjoyable experience in the town centre, as there are lots of independent, quaint shops as well as the larger high street names.
Chepstow is also a walker's paradise thanks to the stunning scenery surrounding it. If you're feeling energetic, try the 17-mile waymarked walk from Chepstow Castle car park to Monmouth. It incorporates the beautiful wooded gorge of the Lower Wye, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The Welsh National takes place at Chepstow racecourse each December for anyone who likes a flutter.
