Why stay here ...

Set in a sheltered and immaculately landscaped park, you can guarantee Knock Caravan and Camping Park is the place to go for a peaceful Irish country setting. The caravan site itself is a part of the 85 acre Marian Shrine at Knock, the scene of the apparition of Our Lady in August 1879. There is a museum and commemorative Basilica as points of interest. You'll never be short of outdoor pursuits and activities as walking, cycling, golf courses and a wide range of fishing options are available.

Knock Caravan and Camping Park is centrally sandwiched between County Galway and County Sligo; it is an ideal base for touring Co Mayo and the West of Ireland. An hour by car from the caravan park will take you to the scenic highlights of both these splendid regions. Be sure to head into the rugged Connemara National Park with its bogs, red deer and famous ponies.

Not up to Caravan and Motorhome Club standards ............

The site itself is ok, although we were told to keep left and left for some reason, which was the landscaped area with some pitches shrouded with overgrown trees which were dark and damp looking. There was a larger open area with a couple of statics pitched up, but that wasn’t an option given to us, although by the time we left (4 night stay) there were caravans pitched there. We managed to get a pitch away from the trees thankfully. The facilities, ie, the showers/toilets, the laundry/wash up area and the TV room were like something out of the 1960s. All the facilities are in desperate need of updating. The furniture in the TV room was a disgrace, I wouldn’t want to sit on it. The site itself was quite nicely maintained, although they really need to limit the time they use loud machinery, ie, leaf blowers and strimmers, it went on for hours. Our biggest gripe was on the day we left. The set up at this site is that you pay 20 euros for a gate fob which does, the obvious, however when you leave you swap the gate fob for the 20 euros, simple. Except on the day we tried to leave at 10.10, there was a sign on the door saying ‘back at 10.45’. I spent the next 10 minutes walking around the site looking for the manager, but another camper told me he had seen the manager drive out in his car earlier. This fellow camper very kindly offered to give us 20 euros and we agave him our gate fob. There was a good 5 minute walk from the gate to the caravan park and I walked this 6 times in order for us to eventually leave. I was so cross that I phoned the manager en route and asked him if it was normal to leave the office unmanned when people were leaving in the morning - his response was “I had an errand to run and then I got stuck behind a coach so was late back” - this wouldn’t happen with the Caravan and Motorhome Club. It seems to me that this site is run on a shoestring and the customer suffers as a consequence. Would I stay here again? ‘definitely not”. Would I recommend this site? ‘definitely not”. It has a lot of potential, but as it stands presently ....... I’d say, find somewhere else to stay ......

Comfortable stopover site

Stayed here for two nights on way from Larne to West Coast. Interesting location - two night just right for us. Had worried about noise from shrine next door having read previous review but not an issue - perhaps only a problem on specific holy days? Family run site. Very clean. Longish walk from barrier but shortcut lane goes directly to neighbouring shrine area. Took us longer than we had expected to drive from Larne due to narrow winding roads - so be careful if you have a ferry to catch!

Great peaceful site

This site is at the Knock Shrine and is extremely peaceful. If you were listening you could hear the bells ringing for one of the 4 services each day but if you had a radio on or were chatting they didn't disturb you at all. We were there for 4 days and it wasn't until the second day my husband heard them at all! There is a path from the site to enter the Shrine which is well worth visiting even if you aren't religious. The mural in the Basilica is amazing and the museum gives you an insight into what life was like when the apparition was witnessed. The original church has had the Apparition Chapel built on to it and a representation of the apparition created in there. This site is also a great base for exploring the Mayo area in general which we did. The site is very well maintained and the facilities are clean. Free wifi is available on site and the staff are friendly and helpful. We would definitely use this site again.

Catholic Shrine

This site is in the centre of Knock near to the catholic shrine. Not being catholic I did not appreciate the regular services broadcast over public address systems. The local town is one big catholic novelty gift shop. We stopped there as a stopover going south to north. If we pass the same way in the future I will go out of my way to find an alternative place to stop.
