Mayday breakdown Premium service?

We have had Mayday breakdown cover for probably about 20 years. Several years ago we upgraded to the Premium cover which included a chauffeur if the driver feel ill and was unable to drive. We thought we were still covered for the chauffeur service however have now found out it is only included in the Premium Plus package.

Has this always been the case or is it something recent in the last 2 - 3 years?

It's still ticked as such under Premium UK

We received the renewal documents yesterday and quoting from page 13 of the new policy booklet "Driver care (Only applicable if you have purchased Extra Care). This now comes at an Extra cost!  It does seem that Mayday is constantly moving the goal posts!

Goes on to state "Provision of a Chauffeur" and summary states that you will have to show medical certificate at the time of the illness or injury.  This could be very difficult if you are in hospital and to get a medical certificate you will need to find a doctor plus you will have to pay for the certificate.

Seems very onerous especially if it is your partner that is left with the caravan and vehicle and they have a B+E inherited through grandfather rights but have never towed in their life and do not feel competent to tow a large unit i.e. 4x4 and twin axle caravan.

For the past year or two we have assumed that the chauffeur cover was included in the Premium package.  Does any one have access to last year or previous years policy book so they can check to see when it changed?

I seem to remember that the reference to alternative driver availability included the word competent or similar.

I renewed again after much thought on the 11th March, my policy booklet still states on Page 10 under 'Driver Care' and 'Provision of Chauffeur' that it is still covered.

Yes it states to show a medical certificate, and the 'Extra Care' is purchased when you buy the Premium package.

So OK in March and with the booklet that came with it, also I have the same booklet for the previous year in the filing cabinet. So if anything has altered it will have been within the last 4 weeks.

Does your booklet have any reference to the Premium UK Plus on page 10?  If you check the CC website on Breakdown cover the chauffeur cover is included but the policy book differs?  Conflicting information.

A bit off thread but it is still cc,our cc C/van insurance is up for renewal we have standard cover ,on the website it shows that it covers recovery after an accident, but when reading the renewal paperwork it is not but they "may pay " as part of the claim ,so you could have to pay first to get recovered, it is only on supercover nowundecided

That is no doubt worded such because the caravan club is not an 'insurer' but a discretionary mutual and one of the facets of a discretionary mutual is that claims are paid at the discretion of the organisation. laughing

This means that you do not have the chauffeur cover any longer as it is definitely an extra under the Premium Plus UK policy for which you pay extra.

Very sneaky and I doubt if any of us have picked this up as how often do you read the booklet from cover to cover!  Possible that a leaflet may have said something about changes to T&Cs that we have forgotten about?

The RAC Arrival is certainly looking a better option for peace of mind!  Sad as we have been with Mayday since 2004 and before that Greenflag!

Both Premium UK and Premium UK Plus include a chauffeur. The difference is enhanced expenses cover and Pre-departure cover.

Enhanced extra care is an upgrade on extra Care, where the ‘driver care’ element is enhanced to a cost of £150 per person (maximum total £900), but also offers the elements of driver care in combination, rather than offering a choice of one exclusive element.

For example, with extra care, if you choose car hire, you are not then also entitled to overnight accommodation. With enhanced extra care, Mayday will work with you to find which elements can be combined to offer you the best solution.
