Disappointed Insurance information

Very disappointed when talking to the Club regarding renewing my caravan insurance to find that they had incorrect information regarding replacing our van under the New for Old cover. When I checked the amount with them that would be needed to replace our existing Sterling Continental 580 the representative tried to tell me that the cost of this van had reduced since last year. When I queried what replacement van she was basing this figure on she advised me that a NEW Sterling Continental was cheaper than last year. When I tried to advise her that this was not possible as Sterling brand were no longer made she continued to insist that it was listed in her guide and was that the sum I wanted to insure for? Even after referring to her manager she was still questioning me as to why I needed a higher amount of cover despite me telling her that I would need to purchase a Swift Elegance model to have an equivalent caravan. After much discussion she quoted me for the figure I felt was required but I found this whole episode worrying. What would have happened if I had accepted her advice then needed to make a claim ? Would they have paid out to replace my van with an equivalent one or would they have said I had under - insured an refused my claim?  Needless to say I've been busy checking other providers.

I thought the caravan and motorhome club didn't do caravan insurance?

You are quite correct.  CAMC decided not to continue to sell caravan insurance a couple of years ago.  It now sells “caravan cover”.  Legally, they are not the same.

Thank you Fastnet for pointing that out - I honestly did not know that the Caravan Club were providing cover not insurance. Having read their definition of who manages their cover -  "the Board"  - I'm wondering if you were to try and dispute their assessment of a claim who is responsible for making an independent decision? Presumably it's not the Insurance Ombudsman as with normal Insurance companies. Bit of a closed shop maybe?

In view of the vague, airy fairy, nebulous quality of the clubs product I would suggest not touching it,  even with a barge pole, but go somewhere where the product is of a positive nature like an insurance brokers recommendation.

Then there should be no misunderstanding.

And there are those on social media sites giving out false information, deleting or blocking people, instead of actually finding out the facts. Talk about the blind leading the blind.

I'm sure the Cover offered by the Club is indeed a good product, but Insurance it is not. Imagine if you were one of the 3% of claims they did not pay out?

And I wonder what is the non pay out rate is of other (non club) insurance?

As always though no one is forced to choose the club's offer, people should do what they think is best. One thing though just by going on what people has posted on this (small) forum, I think three people have said their club claim was met in full and in good time, while two have posted to say their non club insurance didn't pay out. One chooses what one think's is best.

If it's an insurance policy then you have the insurance ombudsman to appeal to. If it's not an insurance policy you do not. Judgement call for the proposer I think. Question how much do you trust the club? What happens if the club ceases to trade?

Indeed David. And those with Motorhomes need not worry either. You'd have thought that an 'inclusive' Club would be just that.

That is very unlikely but who knows?

Again this has been all covered in a previous thread, if I recall correctly the club has itself taken out insurance against any claim larger than it could pay out due to any reason. And again there is recourse to an ombudsman.
