I am trying to find how heavy my 3.9kg cylinder was before being filled. I understand that it is stamped on the metal collar around the tap. However my metal collar is split into four quadrants, two opposite ones are stamped 12    12 a third is stamped 15/ 02. How do I know if it is 12lb 12oz or 15 lb 2 oz? In calculating the weight of gas left it makes a big difference. I would be grateful if somebody could enlighten me??

The two opposite figures are the tare weight. 12lb 12oz is 5.8kg which is well within the spec range.

Calor mark their cylinders in kgs and those figures seem very high for a 3.9 kg bottle.  Are you sure it's not a 6 kg unit?

See:

https://www.calor.co.uk/shop/gas-bottles/3-9kg-propane-gas-bottle.html

then click on the spec tab.

The Calor cylinders I used to have had tare weight in lbs and oz. Being the backward Company they are I don’t imagine they have switched to kg.

You could of course look at Safefill which are much lighter, don’t rust, you can see what gas you have and you’ll save at least 70% on your gas. Recently I bought 11.3 kilos of gas from Andy’s Gas in Bristol which would be about £46 in Calor pennies- £ 11.17 from Andy!!

To save any more theorising, a full 3.9Kg Propane weights about 9Kg; a full 6Kg Propane weights about 14.5Kg, these for normal steel cylinders.

You can easily tell a 3.9Kg and a 6Kg apart: when in place in the caravan the tie strap will go round the body of a 6Kg cylinder but only round the neck of a 3.9Kg - I know - I've just been there!!

I have two Calor Lite cylinders and I’m trying to ascertain which one is full. I’ve weighed both as follows:

1. 10.44 kg

2. 7.7 kg

Am I right to assume that No 1 is a full cylinder please?
