BMW X3 MK3 Factory Tow bar

Hi,

Has anyone got a mk 3 with a factory tow bar? Is there reasonable  clearance for the Alko 3004?

 

As usual, the car dealers and even BMW customer service (uk) whilst trying to help have no idea what I am on about.

The clearance as shown in the photo  on the Tiguan post (s)  would not be acceptable to me.

It's 105 mm/4.25" from the rear valance/bumper to the centre of the ball.

Lutz.  I find to hard to believe you need "enough clearance"  explaining to you. 

I will be posting on the clearance on my new car and towbar in due course and if it is "enough".

No, it#s quite simple. Enough clearance means that it doesn't foul. Anything more than that is personal preference.

Agree with Lutz, if the hitch doesn't touch the bumper then there is enough clearance,half a milli is clearance as is 10 milli. If you fit a new door at home and it catches the carpet you don't cut 6" of the door, you cut enough just to clear the carpet.

Your analogy is as bad as my example smile, I'm certain a brain surgeon would rather have 10mm clearance than half a millimetre when operating close to something that may get damaged.

This discussion for and against clearance is a bit silly, obviously the more clearance the more likelihood there is of avoiding damage when hitching/unhitching, unless you are perfect. Of course limited clearance will work as designed but having a bit spare is always a good thing.

I quite agree. A larger margin of safety is better than a smaller margin, but one person can live with 5mm clearance another may want 20 or more, so where does one set the limit? The only limit that will always apply is when the clearance is zero.

I suppose you could always elongate the holes in the tow bar/chassis fixing and gain another 5/10mm.

That would be illegal as you would be carrying out a technical modification that is not covered by the type approval of the towbar.
