I tow a single axle van.  Weight of car (Smax)to van is 1750/1550 KG which is 88%.  I tow with a stack of weight in the boot as well (40kg awning for eg) plus passengers.  I wouldn’t want to raise the ratio although appreciate double axle will be more steady, but I think the Kuga is lighter.

what I find is the Smax which is 150ps engine lacks power towing compared with my last Smax with same size engine.  Apparently due to the higher Euro classification which impacts power.  I have just had a look at engine remapping which will take it up to 190-210ps as the engine is the same as what is in the higher power Smax.  My dealer on the quiet said it wouldn’t be a problem but obviously didn’t want to be quoted.  I also checked insurance and it added £5 to renewal.

So I would look for the higher power engine coupled with weight but in my case in meant getting the 180 PS engine meant also having the top of the range model which added £4K to the purchase price
