CL Site Owners' Website

If you are a keen supporter of the CL network you might like to know that there's a dedicated support group for CL owners where they share best practice, information and encourage other landowners to set up new CLs.

The group liaises with the Club on a regular basis, but like the CLs themeselves, it is entirely independent. The group receives no financial support or direction from the Club. The group was formed in 2014 and now has over 600 members.  Find out more on our website

How you can help: If you are visiting a CL and think they could benefit from advice or support from fellow CL owners, please point them in the direction of the group.  Likewise, if you know someone with a great spot for a new CL, the Owners Group website is a complementary source of information to the Clubs own guide for setting up a CL.

The group is entirely run by volunteers (all CL owners), is free to join and welcomes feedback from CAMC members, especially those with knowledge of the CL network!

Mikey, your comments such as “mud bath” show scant respect for the efforts and substantial outlay that many CL owners give to their Sites.

It’s only because lots of CLs choose to invest in their Sites, and stay open during the Winter months, that it is fairly easy to tour in Winter. Many of the Club’s own Sites close, or have a shortened season, with few staying open beyond early November. Choosing a Club Site over a CL in some areas (Cornwall for example) just isn’t possible.

Edit: you of course could do neither, as you aren’t a Member😉

No matter how well a CL/CL is tended there is always the possibility that a period of wet weather will turn a idyllic site into a swamp. Our own lawn is currently very wet and I try not to even walk on it.

As CL/CS only normally have a choice of 5 pitches which may not be all hardstanding there is a greater chance that the pitch you are given/chosen will not be pristine in wet conditions, There are 5 van sites that we have been to previously that we would risk in Winter but equally others we would not.

As we very rarely ever revisit a CS/CL ( or a even a Club site) we tend to shy away from risking an unknown 5 van site in Nov - Feb. However we would visit an unknown Club site during the same period.

For your info, a "Club site" can also refer to a site run by the "friendly club"  Who knows if we are desperate in the future we may rejoin the CAMC but don't hold your breath!

If metering became the normal then you might just find it cheaper to go down the safefill route and run your heating off gas. I can imagine just how much it costs in electric to run Alde  heating, as I can get through a 10kg safefill in 4 days using the heating

So you'd get a very precise electricity costing which would help your investigation.

Not really because his electric after a certain am mount is charged for. It is not an investigation it is one simple question.

DT one way of obtaining a rough idea would be to compare the cost per night of open all year CLs. Those with EHU and those without.

Unless a CL owner has separate metering of the CL it would not be easy for them to monitor CL electric usage.

From my own personal experiences of using metered pitches, in summer months it can cost less than £1 a day and in winter it can be the same if I use gas for heating and I don't use the electric kettle. My average consumption without electric heating is about 4Kw per day of which the fridge uses the most.

I'll add I think we are fairly low users of electric. We do not have every electrical appliance under the sun. We cook using gas, lighting is LEDs, TV is 12v and we do not use supplementary heating devices. About the only extra significant electical appliance we have that didn't come with the van is a hair dryer and that is not used that often.

Thank you for all your comments.  I have taken your feedback on board (and adapted the website) and I hope you have had an opportunity to see life from the 'other side of the fence'.

There are a couple of outstanding issues that I am happy to answer, but otherwise, it seems this discussion has run its course and will be prone (as many CT discussion do) to run off-topic.

Electricity Costs.  These will vary from CL to CL and whether they run from a Domestic or Business account.  All I can tell you is that on my CL, where I don't charge in the summer months, but do charge for more than 10kWh in the winter months, the rate is .22p per unit.  This includes Climate Levy (which is on all business accounts) and is the cheapest rate I can achieve.

Glamping Pods.  Some CL owners have installed these on their property as they are very popular and provide an alternative income stream with a relatively high ROI.  My understanding is that pods would not be allowed to be sited on the designated CL area (the area controlled by the Club) as they would be in position for more than 28 days.  The CL owners that I am aware of that have installed any form of Pod have sought the appropriate Planning Permissions and informed the Club.

Generally, I think that members are very supportive of complementary accommodation as they can then invite friends and relatives to holiday with them.

The 2021 season

CL owners look forward to welcoming members owning Campervans, Motorhomes, Trailer Tents and Caravans as soon as we are allowed to open after these ghastly (but necessary) lockdowns.  Hopefully, Owners will 'weather the storm' both financially and mentally, but I would not be surprised if a number decide that it is time for them to close their gates for good.

The Owners Group aims to offer support to those who are felling the strain, and encourage new owners to set up a CL for the benefit of all members.

Again, thank you for all your feedback on this thread.  I will not be following this discussion further as I simply don't have time, but you are welcome to email me directly if you wish a particular point clarified.  ted@clsiteowners.co.uk

Ted, I'm pleased to see the website has been amended with regard to one night stays by MHs but it shouldn't have needed posters here to point out the term used was anti-customer and far from friendly.

Btw, I still will not use any CL that attempts to penalise me for staying only one night as part of a tour and, note, I do not wildcamp.
