Just spoke with red pennant and they have stated that their underwriters will not cover anything related to the corona virus. The nice chap on the phone stated they are in negotiation with them to have that turned round so that policy holders can be reassured. We will see

The club web site said that policies taken out from 17 March would not cover anything related to Covid 19. The implication being that policies taken out earlier would cover such claims. Our policy was taken out in January for travel in June. The policy wording says nothing about exclusions relating to virus related claims. I was subsequently told by club staff that all policies excluded claims relating to the disease irrespective of when they were taken out. I reluctantly accepted cancellation of the policy and a refund. To me this verges on sharp practice and an insurance industry seeking to avoid its responsibilities.

Taking this discussion a step further. Does anyone know if there are moves afoot to extend existing Red Pennant policies as a result of the travel bans? After all, they've been covering a non-existant risk for at least 10 months now and I resent having paid for something I cannot use.

I contacted the club and they refunded all my money, but my policy had not yet started, might be different if your policy was in force when all this kicked off undecided

Shouldn't you be asking RP this?

I am curious though. If you knew you couldn't travel, why did you buy a policy?

I dont know when TerryB bought his but mine with the C&CC was renewed in January 2020 in the full expectation that we would be travelling  late March. I didn't chase them for a refund while still hoping to travel later in the year. However as they (C&CC)  pretty soon  into the pandemic washed their hands of foreign travel and made their staff redundant I put it down to experience.  When I travel again I will look elsewhere.

Last year I had booked my ferry but and matters progressed I received an IOU. I had deferred taking out my Red Pennant until nearer the time of travel so I wasn't caught out by this problem. Given current uncertainties, I would imagine many will leave arranging various aspects of travel until much closer to that time.
