Charging electric vehicles on club pitches

Whilst a club site I observed a fellow caravaner charging his vehicle via the external socket of his caravan, is this procedure conducive with the guidance given on site leaflets "that the use of electricity should be considered to help minimise our effect on the environment", additional should extra charges be made for carrying out such procedure.

Having no idea of the costs involved I googled it - see link here

Costs seem to vary quite a bit but if the CAMC policy is to allow vehicle charging at no separate cost to the recipient and pitch fees inevitably rise as a direct result, I for one will not be paying those increased fees and I will do what some will no doubt suggest ie go elsewhere.

If I am reading that right, it implies it would take 100 kw hours of electricity to charge the Tesla to get a cost of £10.

It would not be possible to pull that much from the site post, even in 24 hours with nothing else running. Realistically overnight the most you could pull is about 44 kw hours. So you would have to hope it was not empty, or you would not be going far the next day.

It would mount up though, particularly in the summer, when normally folk would not be using as much from the EHU.

"Who knows those who have been asking for metering may get their wish.☹️ "

By far the most equitable solution then no one would have cause to point out that they are subsidising others motoring costs.

IMO it would also promptly address the profligate use of electrical power that I believe the present system, unfortunately, cultures in some of my "fellow" members.

The law protects us from being unfairly charged for what metered electrical power we chose to use.

If the Club is to allow this to continue, why have they installed a metered point at the Brighton site? I shall watch this thtead with interest to see if the Club responds.

Being an electric car owner I've already asked the club to respond to this thread Peedee. I know some of the answers on usage, remember a car will only be on a part charge etc.

Hi, it costs less than £1 to re-charge our PHEV from flat. A maximum of 6 hours @ 10amps. Alex.

There is currently a story on BBC Scotland web page about new electric buses for Edinburgh. I quote:-

The vehicles can run for up to 130 miles, and take three to four hours to fully charge.

They are full size single deckers - would make a very nice motor caravan!

Works out about right if you’re on a night tariff Alex.

One or two of these vehicles on a site per night is hardly going to change the current consumption to the Club for that individual site, but as numbers increase and more vehicles start plugging in to site EHU’s, the costs to the Club will soon start to mount up.

If these costs are then loaded on to some already expensive site fees, a whole new debate will be on the cards.

On the flip side, if the Club were to look at metering sites, that’s a huge expense too. You would expect site fees to fall if metering came in but as the capital cost has to be covered, I suspect the fees would remain static.

A financial balancing act for the Club in the coming years.

Only suitable for time-rich pensioners though. It would taker a long time to get anywhere distant.
