UK Sites where no car is needed

There was a discussion on this subject started by royandsharont when Club Together first started, but the thread was "lost" when the forum was migrated.

Perhaps we can collectively re-create a list of sites within a short walk/bike ride or with easy public transport links to towns and places of interest.

Please keep your remarks brief so the list is easy to read.

Here goes ........................

Moderator Edit:

I've made this 'sticky' so it doesn't get lost down the thread.

If only the site book could indicate sites where no car needed.  Or even mentioned in the site detail.  I find I have to trawl through the reviews manly from like, indeed motorhomers to find out what's near the site. I have suggested to the club they could bear this in mind when they write reviews in the magazine. Tired of reading what's nearby and no mention of how you get there without a car. Most motorhomers rely on getting about by walking safely, cycling on quiet roads or being able to get safely walking on a pavement to a bus stop.  We had a bad experience  at Durham which is only a few miles down the road and near park and ride. What they didn't say to walk to park and ride to catch the bus you have to cross a dual carriage way and even cross over the slip road from A1. Lethal.

I have some sympathy with your post. When I write a review I do try and mention the things you ask for. For example I want to know how far the village/town is in distance if I have to walk, something I am not as good at as I once was. Nice to know if it has a safe path. Bus services are they regular or twice a day! Even the specialist motorhome magazine MMM is sometimes guilty of not giving as much detail as it should. We are fortunate that we have a useful tool in Google Maps. It is easy enough to plot a route to the nearest town or village and measure the distance. It also shows bus stops and a click on the bus stop symbol will give you the route number to allow further investigation. Street View is also useful to establish whether there are footpaths alongside the roads into town. I can understand that many reviews by people that caravan wouldn't mention such things as they have a car available but you would think fellow motorhomers would.

Does GoogleEarth still do that. Recently I've found that clicking on the bus stop produces no additional information on my MacBook Pro.

It does on my iPad using the App and even highlights the route and other stops. On the iMac I have to use the browser version and although that also gives bus numbers and details of the route, I have found no way to highlight it as I can with the app.

That is why I mentioned Google Maps rather than Google Earth. It seems whilst you can see the bus stops on on Google Earth but there is no longer any information on the service although you do get a picture of the bus stop! Even with Google Maps you do have to zoom in to get them to show.

I am new to this site and maybe I am missing something but the wife and I need to find sites that have EHU and have a town or large village within a 5-10 minute walk, public transport is not an option for us as wife is disabled and uses a mobility scooter so she will not entertain using buses, the site must have EHU for her medical equipment. Is there a way to search this info as the default is village/shops within 1 mile which is often to far for us. We are going to try Warwick race course as it looks very close to the shops but it took ages reading reviews and googling maps for the route & distance etc.

Any recommendations would be great but please only a short walk (and no steps) within approx 100 miles of Leicester. Many thanks

All club owned/operated sites have EHU with the exception of Steamer Quay at Totnes, Devon.

I suspect Google Earth will be useful to you and, as a final check, you can always ring the site warden once you’ve found a likely site. The search facility has a filter for shops/village within 1 mile but I don’t know how reliable that is.

Maybe you could consider joining C&CC as well as this club to widen your choice.

Btw, you can choose your own username in My Profile at the head of the page.

Without looking back through the posts on here I can recommend the Tewkesbury site for a level easy walk to shops, riverside areas and nice open spaces. You can book a multi surface pitch at Tewkesbury for a small charge and that would be easy for a mobility scooter. Moreton in Marsh is another base with good level access, both sites would fit your Leicester driving distances.

The Broadway site would fit the bill too, I think. Cirencester Park would have been a possibility, but I'm not sure if it fits the bill following all the work that has gone on around the entrance road.

I think the fact that you have discounted public transport is going to be very limiting for you. All buses (except very tiny van like ones)  now have facilities for mobility scooters. Would a taxi be an alternative? There are lots of sites, see my link on page one of this discussion, that are near to towns and villages but they are rarely as close as you seem to require. There is a small Facebook Group called Pitch and Park which is dedicated to sites near to towns and it has a downloadable .PDF of such sites.
