So sad to read just now of his passing on Sunday at his home in Cambridge. Loved to hear voice and hos lovely way with words. RIP.

A brilliant raconteur, reviewer and author. We have all his books re Guardian reviews, and his early childhood growing up in Australia. Our caravan loo is always called “the dunny” after his oh so funny tales of the weekly dunny (toilet) emptying saga. It’s our homage to him.

We also still call Poldark.....oldkraP after his mid 1970’s review😂 

I thought that he had died around 10 years ago. Yes he was a delight.

There was a false obituary done for him a while ago, been very ill for a while.

To correct my post, CJ wrote reviews in Observer, not the Guardian.

I always found his sardonic wit most entertaining
