Just read the news that he's passed away aged 81 years.

Gordon Banks was one of the greatest goalkeepers of his or any other generation and he will forever be remembered for his heroic part in England’s triumphant 1966 World Cup campaign that culminated in the famous 4-2 victory over West Germany at Wembley in the final.

Sadly, the heroes of 1966 are passing away, one by one. Gordon Banks was an outstanding goalkeeper and a fine gentleman from before the "primary donna" age of footballers. He played a leading role in England'squad 1966 campaign, but don't forget also that "save of the century" from Pele in 1970.

Gordon Banks RIP.

A legend both on the field and off it. Without doubt the best 'keeper this country has ever known. He was a gentleman who had time for everyone and his humility shone through when you were in his company.

RIP Gordon

Sold his World Cup medal a few years ago for money for his family.  What a difference to todays multi millionaire prima donna players.

RIP Gordon

i was very lucky in being invited to Wembly for the 50th anniversary celebrations of the World Cup win in July 2016 where we had dinner with many of the surviving members of the team including Gordon.

he was real gent and gave my wife a signed pair of his gloves...

the previous night we stayed in the same (lucky) hotel the team stayed in prior to their final win on July 30th (I remember it as clear as day) and the pic shows Gordon, Jack and Mrs Charlton on our way to the transport to Wembly for dinner that evening..

i also have a penguin suit on but you're not seeing that one....wink
