Sad to see that British Football has lost another Class 1 Act in Ian St John
Even this Hard line England fan has only good memories of the Saint !! And I remember, and repeated, the sign on the Liverpool Church placard { No Offence Intended and I hope none taken ~~ Brian }
" JESUS SAVES " under which some Scouse wag wrote "But St John knocks in the rebound"

I moved to Liverpool, or should I say I was forcibly relocated, with family in the 60s.
I lived within a "Give it some welly" clearance from Anfield and was soon spending my pocket money watching people like St.John, Roger Hunt, Ron Yeats etc.
ISJ always reminded me of a Jack Russell that someone had taken it's toy away from him. A right terrier. I met him once when playing footie in Stanley Park. He'd walked to a chemist opposite and was taking a short cut back to Anfield. He had a bit of a laugh with the 4 of us knocking it about for about 5 minutes and toddled off. Nice fella. No-one dared trying to take the ball off him, not even our resident Blue Nose.

Not many will remember his debut for Liverpool, when he scored a hat-trick in a 4-3 loss to Everton. Liverpool were in the second division then and he, along with Shankly, were attributed (and rightly so) of turning them into the team they've become today.
His punditry with Jimmy Greaves was always entertaining and like his football, great fun to watch.

Greavsie was not always at his sharpest in the'Saint & Greavsie' Show ...
The Leicester goalie, Mark Wallington, made a tremendous diving save from a shot that he would have seen very late, after it fizzed through a crowd of players' legs, in a game that ended 2-2.
Saint went into raptures about Wallington's 'fabulous save, brilliant wasn't it Greavsie, what a piece of goalkeeping?'
There followed several secondsof silence and Greavsie replied, eventually, 'Yeah'...
