John Hume

Politicians probably don't figure much in this section and many don't deserve it. However John Hume is probably a worthy exception. He devoted his life (often at risk) to peace in Northern Ireland. If only he had been listened to 50 years ago perhaps the Province would not have gone through the horror that it, and the mainland, went through. One of my favourite anecdotes was when he was being interviewed with Ian Paisley and he leaned across and said that if the word No didn't exist in the English language you would be speechless!

If only there were more of his ilk around.

Any man who can still see the light at the end of a long long tunnel and manage to get there with disparate people like Adams and Paisley on opposite sides deserves all of the respect that has been shown to him.

Fully agree WN, I do not follow politics too closely but to put ones life on the line as he did was superb,  just so very sad that , like many, his later years were not for him to fully enjoy.
