In praise of British Cheese

Having just returned from the self styled capital of the cheese world, namely France, I would like to say how much we love British Cheese. Yes, we did enjoy many different types of French Cheese and count some of them among our own favourites but I don't think British Cheeses get the plaudits they deserve.

Nothing tastes quite like a really good Cheddar, our current one is Colliers (a Welsh one), or a Blackstick Blue or a Shropshire Blue or Mrs. Applebys Cheshire or a creamy Lancashire. Plus we are prepared to experiment with our cheese, by putting chilli or mustard etc. in. There are some smashing local entrepreneurs making cheese these days.

Why are our cheese not more respected?

Some of you may remember my earlier posts (when I was a member) I have now finished touring and have also moved to North Yorkshire and felt duty bound to inform you cheese lovers of 2 simply fantastic cheesemongers I have discovered since moving here.

If you’re ever near Northallerton, Lewis & Cooper are well worth a visit.

Further north in Darlington is The Cheese & Wine shop, which is simply the best ‘monger I’ve ever come across (limited opening times) who source products all over the UK and Europe and is quite superb.

Both worthy of your diaries if you’re in the area

Mrs WN picked up our cheese order from the Deli today.

Some Montagnolo Blue, a soft blue cheese, some Rosary Goats Cheese laced with herbs, great for omelettes or grilled on toast, some Clemency Hall Cheddar, a real treat, and finally some Epoisses, a pungent soft French cheese just like Brie but smellier!

All set apart from needing some extra crackers in our last shop. Oh, and maybe a nice Port to go with them.

For dinner (aka lunch) today  we had a potato and mushroom tortilla - using eggs from a neighbour, and topped with Mozzarella made with our own milk. Part of an experimental project by a local Cheese Maker. It’s not quite there yet, but we don’t mind the samples.

Well that sounds good Goldie, hope it takes off. We've got a water buffalo herd not far from us, OH has tried their meat which he says is good, it's low in fat (I think?!) Haven't tried their mozarella or icecream, maybe I will now. smile

I bought some Keens this week, I don't usually buy unpasteurised cheese (my Mum used to test herds and milk supplies for TB in days of yore.) Anyway it was very nice, strong but not salty, so worth a try! 🐄

Bought some Barbers 1833 Hartendale Extra Mature Cheddar hen at Chatsworth Farm Shop.

Had some for lunch and it's a good punchy cheddar. Apparently matured for a couple of years.

Tried a cheese from Weardale when away recently, Bonny Moor Hen. It was pale and lightly smoked with a white wax rind. Found it reduced in the Tebay Farm shop. Nice flavour. smile
