Environment v quality of life

We are being advised to avoid eating red meat and dairy products, to eliminate cattle and reduce production of methane.  One MP suggests we should scrap all our cars.   The Amazon rain forest, which produces 20% of Earth's oxygen and soaks up CO2, is seriously under threat.  The oceans are being polluted at an alarming rate, and coral reefs are dying in vast numbers.  Household refuse is becoming difficult to manage, and recycling has a long way to go before it becomes really effective.  Oh dear, what a boring outlook for future generations.  It's great to be old!smile

Thank you David, for another well considered post, as ever. Pliers asks who’s criticising Greta - see here Pliers https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/women/greta-thunberg-climate-change-crisis-strike-austism-misogyny-protest-speech-a9127971.html

We have a Prime Minister who was a climate change denier, until the then Prime Minister told, not asked, him to do a U turn for political expediency. The US President patronised her.  But she’s got some good advisors along with her own marketing talent, so she’s out finessed him. The Chinese have taken major and effective steps to reduce population growth, the Japanese birth rate has dropped below parity, and the Brazilian president is hell bent on maintaining popularity by appeasing Amazon forest abusers. A wannabe UK Prime Minister wants to restore lost benefits for families with > two children.

In truth, populism is overwhelming any well considered plans for a sustainable future for our children. To an extent, that’s the inevitable result of allowing votes from people who aren’t educated to research before expressing views. Others trample the majority, out of self interest. Maybe I should switch off our LED bathroom lights instead of writing.

Excuse me, but where did I ask “ Who’s criticising Greta” ?

🤔

Speaking on behalf of a large percentage of Northern folks, HS2 is not popular up here. It’s not a quicker link to the Golden paved streets of London we need but better, weather proof links across the Pennines. Try getting across the Snake, Cat and Fiddle or even the M62  in a foot of snow! But what do we Northern folks know.......🤔

+ 1  TTDA !!

When I was on Emergency Call Outs, I always did the Winter Driving Practice up the A54 to Buxton then back on the A537. Always good to get back into Snow Mode before it reached into lowland Cheshire !! But it could get a bit hairy at times  innocent

Easy tips for doing nothing-

bury head in sand

blame everyone else

trash any arguement to the contrary

spread duff information

spin and spin again

actively popularise fake news

sit back and enjoy your life, sleep easy and have no conscience or thought for those who follow

Now who/what does that remind us of!

Amidst all the talk of climate change, we hear little about population growth. Any given land area has a finite capability to produce food/water. I fear that until we address this issue as well, were are headed for disaster.

its the same with public services and housing...

why isnt the Big Issue talking about reducing housing requirements (to alleviate the Big Issue) rather than campainging to satisfy an unchecked increasing demand.

we have many, many, houses being built near us....who buys them at the prices they are set at? where do these thousands of folk work, theres no industry/serious employment in any of the places the building is taking place as far as i can make out.

the answer always seems to be 'extract funds, build more' never trying to stem/reduce the demand.

the relentless increasing clamour for resources, and its inevitible finite impact cant be addressed by 'building more' (anything)

are you saying they are/will be standing empty?

I suspect it is people with the money/jobs to do so (probably headteacherswink). And why not?

I suppose I think the same idle thoughts when I pass by my local Marquis dealer a few miles away, motorhomes all priced at £50000 plus on the front row, this is in a very, what's the word, 'industrial and cheaper housing' area where the average wage will be far far below the cost of the motorhomes on sale. Who buys them? Yet unless they shuffle their stock around every week or so they do.
