Safefill - Refillable Gas Cylinders

Last summer, as part of my ambition to do far more off-grid touring, I thought I'd invest* in Safefill. Perhaps my alarm belles should have been ringing when the place I went to go to purchase a canister was Brayford Leicsure and they only had one size available - the medium sized one - and lots of them! But nonetheless I coughed up my circa £160 for it and have them fill it up and carried on smug in the knowledge that I would soon be quids in in longer term savings.

However, for various personal reasons we haven't been able to get out in the caravan anything like as much as we had hoped since then - partly due to a job change and house move - we've only just got round to needing to re-fill it. I duly looked on Safefill's website to find stockists and discovered that there was only one in about a 10 mile radius. That would be ok if this garage would actaully allow me to refill it. Notices on their lpg pumps said that individual gas canisters were not be refilled here and before I even checked at the kiosk a forceful looking lady shouted at me saying that I couldn't fill that thing here!  However, after discussion she told me where, locally, I could get it sorted. I thanked her and went on to that location. Unfortunately she clearly mistook Safefill with standard Calor gas. I tried to call Safefill at this point only to hear that I couldn't leave a message as the mailbox was full!

I proceeded to look for an alternative website to see where LPG was stocked and then proceeded to a couple of other locations, one which didn't actaully exist anynore and another also refused to let me fill my Safefill container. Having wasted 2 hours on a wild goose chase I decided to head home as I had work to do rather annoyed and frustrated.

So, can anyone else tell me if they'ved had simialr unhelpful experiences with Safefill or, more helpfully, let me know somewhere where I can get my cylinder refilled in the Beds/Herts/Bucks area.

Very much lool forward to hearing responses.

Cheers,

Tim.

*for investment read expensive wasted of money!

On a site this weekend that sold LPG but they also refill normal Calor bottles, said they have an adaptor and bottle has to be completely empty as they have a chart that Flo Gas gave them to let hem know ho much to put in so they are only 80% full!!!

That is totally out of order! If it was illegal to refill a rental cylinder before the new Red Guide, it’s illegal now! The fact is that the cylinder belongs to a company and is their property. By filling it, they are denying that company it’s rental profits. It’s theft- it may seem strange and some may even be cheering to see the big boys getting denied their rental but it’s theft never the less- name and shame. If I were a cynic I would say this is another attempt to weaken companies like Safefill, Gaslow and co who have done everything right. Well dodgy and taudry in the extreme!

However, I am not sure I believe the fillers of the cylinders. I find it difficult to believe that a company as large as Flogas would enter into such a devious and downright illegal scheme- this is worth  further investigation!

Hi K- is this a Motorhome? Do they allow Safefill? If so Johm at Newton Grove would be interested as he is building this database for Safefill Friendly sites. This might be a timely opportunity to say that I have been in touch with Majita at MyLPG.eu I am trying to get him to make it possible for Safefill Friendly sites to be filtered and then if possible by County- so please folks, if you come across a refill point that has no problem with Safefill, please post it to the forum or email Newton Grove direct with the information so that way the database will build.

Just noticed this......Canal Garage is already mentioned on the list that is being compiled as someone else had checked it out regarding Safefill.

We have a caravan but have a fixed Gaslow system with external filling point, so no problem filling anywhere.

OH did go in to ask where the LPG pumps were, and can confirm that the person manning the desk was not bothered whether we had fixed or portable cylinders.

As we were  filling, a MH also pulled in to fill LPG, from the look on his face it was clear he had never seen anyone filling LPG into a caravan before.

I agree Merve, it is very unlikely that Calor, Flogas, and the like have provided data.  However, the information is readily available on the internet and elsewhere.  One can easily buy an adaptor to DIY and they come with the information.  Of course it is not a criminal offence to refill rentals but it is civil offence for the renter to do so or have it done.

Yes, I’m very doubtful that the full truth is in this one DD. I have a sneaking suspicion that this is a method used by whoever these people are to sell more gas. I think if Calor, Flo or whoever supplies their gas knew of it, gas supplies might be stopped immediately! I have to say I’m not sure whether it is criminal or a civil offence but it’s illegal that’s for sure. As I say, if it was illegal before the new Red Guide, then it’s illegal now- no matter who does it. All that changed or was added was regarding the filling of “properly constructed user/owner cylinders “ due to their acceptance into the mix. I think the gas supply company would be very interested in this!!

I can only go on what I was told, I assumed it was Flo Gas who gave them the information as it was a Flo Gas installation but the warder said they were given a chart.  I asked if he meant just refillable bottles and he said no the normal ones too that the adaptor fits.

The site does have a high proportion of seasonal pitches including lots of American RV's on site so I guess they have a captive audience who are grateful to be bale to do this.

I would have bought some gas myself but at 86p a litre I will go elsewhere.
