Posted on 20/01/2021 09:52 by MethevenWaiting in for a 'Smart Meter' person who is going to replace the electric and gas meters. I have delayed it for so long but the tariff I'm on is excellent and only dependent upon the installation of the Smartmeters, and really have no objection to them. Our meter enclosures are external so the risk is minimal, just that it's pouring down with rain, poor man, oops poor person

We had someone come out to look at installing a smart meter for us. Meters are fairly new, but box isn’t, like yours, outside the house. “My, that’s an old box, haven’t seen one like it before, I will need to come back”
Two years now......... We aren’t too bothered. We email our readings in once a month to our supplier. Still with a good one!đ Everything is online.
Thats a good phrase WN, “paddling”. Very apt.

Our boxes are the white glass fibre type, new on the house build about 25 years ago. All fitted and given the 'smart' monitor which is now in the drawer, we use what we use to stay comfortable and I see no use for it really. It didn't bother me giving the readings online either but they offered a good electric and gas tariff rate if fitted and guaranteed against a price hike for 2 years.
I also insisted on the latest version (SMETS2) so if/when I eventually change supplier the meters will still work with the new supplier, unlike the previous version1.
Oh well, another bit of technology in the drawer

amazing isnt it. we have a very old but very usable ipad, my daughter bought it as a birthday present for OH when she worked in Kuwait, in a case so in very good condition, but i found out this week, when trying to load Scrabble go so that we can play with Gkids etc, that the ipad is 3rd generation so not able to load OS level 10 which is most recent, and guess what lots of games out there now need iOS 10 or above, yes you can play Scrabble go via facebook, great if you dont mind being bombarded with advertisments, but i took the easy option, but most expensive option and bought a new tablet. iPad might be of use to youngest Gchild to play games on, but in reality it is now a defunct piece of kit, simply because Apple could not be bothered to support anything below 4th generation I should say Scrabble go works on most android phones but OH found her phone screen a tad small.

We had new smart meters fitted back in 2019. Given the date I think they must have been the new versions. We did have a few initial teething problems with them. One weird thing was that the decimal point on the display was in the wrong place and it looked as if we were using ten times the energy we were!!! It took a while to get the display working but we did in the end. Then our energy supplier Co-Op decided to merge with Octopus Energy. No issue with that but for the two years we have been with Octopus we have only had electricity show on the display! Not sure when it will be resolved but it does make me doubt a bit whether swapping between suppliers is any better with smart displays. I have sent numerous emails to Octopus and they told me in the middle of December it would take about two weeks to sort out but 5 weeks later on change. All it means is that I have to do a manual meter reading once a month which is not too onerous, perhaps it's down to COVID.

Posted on 20/01/2021 14:47 by TinwheeleriOS10? That's ancient, Rufsđ. Mineâs running iOS14.3.
Welcome to the world of Apple (and they're not alone) and inbuilt obsolescence. It's all about getting you to buy a nice new iPad and nothing to do with them not being bothered.

Yes IOS14.3 but was told by currys that they come with iOS10 and you then have to upgrade, FOC, happens when you go online i guess, like most devices depending on how long they have been on the shelf depends on how up to date they are.
Can I interest you in a mint condition 3rd generation iPad, comes with case
bought a Samsung tablet, reviews say it is as good if not better than latest iPad, 10.4 inch screen.
looked at buying a pucker copy to run on Windows 10 laptop, but 2xlaptops we have, not very old, 1 insufficient RAM, 2nd graphics card too old . , no wonder peoples houses are full of old technology stuffed in the drawer

Posted on 20/01/2021 15:24 by TinwheelerRufs, gear running iOS10 hasnât been sold for years. Devices are updated via settings. Connect to wifi and check it.

yes i know re iOS 10 but that is what curries told me, did not believe them but did not want to prove a point as not going to buy anyway.
existing one that is 3rd generation highest software level is iOS 9.3.5, i have that.
p.s. i used to be a software programmer of sorts many years ago when we were using basic and C/C+, then moved into IT/telecoms, ended up working for a Satilite comms provider providing satellite coms for Oil Rigs/Drill ships/platforms , so have been round the block a bit, but still struggling with todays stuff, nearly bought an Amazon tablet, cheap, but before i took the plunge did some research and found they run a cut down version of Android, and guess what did not support Scrabble go.

If you check the Apple website it will tell you what version of software is installed in the devices on sale now. Older ones will not support the latest versions but your Pads need updating to whatever is available for them. By not doing updates you will be missing out on security features.
You seem to have had a very varied career path.

When the 'Bug' first struck last year my P.C. went a bit do-lally so I considered getting a small device as a back up but was advised by the repair man that I'd be better waiting until the panic buying for Home Schooling had ended and prices returned to something approaching normal again. Well I'm still waiting, but at least the old P.C. is working ( fingers crossed ) like a good 'un now so all up-dating plans are on hold still !
