Preparation for your first trip

What have you done in preparation for when you can take your first trip this year?

I have washed and cleaned off the black streeks of my motorhome and in the process given the body work a thorough inspection. Some paint touching up is necessary and I have procured what is hopefully matching paint and I am waiting for warmer weather to commence this task.

While washing the roof I found one of the 4 solar panel’s feet which should be glued to the roof had come adrift. Managed to lift it just enough to wipe the join clean as best I could and squirt some Sikaflex 512 under the foot and this has thankfully secured it again but regular inspection is probably now necessary until I am confident there will be no more problems.

Chassis cab service and MOT were carried out in December. Batteries checked ok and it started first time but tyres need pumping up all round before the next outing. Windscreen washer topped up with screen wash, oil and lights all checked ok.

I decided to add an external TV aerial connection point for both satellite and terrestrial TV. It was with in trepidation I drilled two holes three centimetres apart in an appropriate place in the side of the van to feed the two coaxial cables into the interior and trunking. The exterior unit was then glued to the side wall with Sikaflex 512. It seems a sturdy enough fix not to bother with any fixing screws.  I still have the internal terminations to complete to make it easy to swap TV aerial feeds.

No habitation problems noticed but the interior needs a tidy up before use and when it warms up the water system needs priming and the fridge vent coves will require removing. Hopefully everything will then be fine after a long layup.

We are bringing the caravan home tomorrow from storage for a thorough clean before its mobile service on Sunday (not by a vicar! laughing). Once it is filled it with clothes, bedding, wine etc we'll take it back to storage ready for a quick getaway later in the week. Cornwall here we come!

Our first use of the c/van will be out of storage onto site for a few days ,to ensure everything is in order ,and if not we can pop home (3miles) while it is sorted before our first trip away

Our first trip is scheduled for late June and the caravan's annual service will be undertaken in early June, we were informed by the engineer after last years service the tyres would require replacing this year due their age so hopefully after a good clean we should be good to go

We're off to our favourite CS, near Malton, in a week's time and, next month it's a week at Skybarn Farm CL, near Lincoln.  Can't wait!

Checked the tyre pressures yesterday and was surprised how much they had gone down over the winter.  Just dosed the water system with Puriclean and will leave that over night before I flush it out. I know everything else is working OK because the van has been in regular use (on the drive!) since we last went away in September.

It needs a polish before next week but that will have to wait until the weather warms up a bit and this bitterly cold north-easterly stops blowing.

I found the same today when I checked mine RandR. Had to move the van on the mover to get close enough to the car to blow them up, so that's still working too. Upped the car's tyre pressures too as we head off in a week's time too, and won't be driving far before then.

Can’t help feeling there are just going to be so many vans and MHs out on the roads  after next week, everyone cheerfully heading off trying to have a bit of fun and a change of scenery😁 We are looking forward to our first trip, not too far. We are still hovering around dates for second jabs, but hoping to get away a few times each month, along with some longer breaks eventually. Be good to see some of places we love again, but also try some new places as well👍

That's the main reason why we're not going too far from home on this trip.  Our second jabs are due anytime soon - in fact if last time is anything to go by, we expect to get the text to get us to book on Sunday evening. We'll be less than an hour from home (without the van on the back) - so no problem if we have to nip home.

If second jabs are due soon go on government vaccine website. There are several ways to "identify" yourself easily via dob, nhs number etc.

I think it had a few glitches as we were awaiting 91 year old mothers second jab and had heard nothing. It came up that she had missed/declined it so have arranged it for next week.

R&R, you'll like Skybarn if you haven't been before. You can get LPG at Brayford Leisure a mile or two up the road.

Thanks Cy - we've been loads of times and Meg's looking forward to chasing hares across the fields.  Note - I did say 'chasing' - she hasn't got a hope in hell of getting anywhere near onesmile

I always top up the Safefill at Brayford - simply because it's so handy.

When we became geriatrics and gave up real sailing, we had our Linnsen motor yacht in the marina at Burton Waters for many years, so we know the area well.  Can thoroughly recommend eating at the Pyewipe Inn on the banks of the Fossdyke, if you ever go back.
