I am soon to take delivery of my first caravan and need some advice regarding which awning to use on a seasonal pitch, air or pole. I would welcome advice and opinions.

Kampa do a range of awnings for seasonal use. If you look at the Attwool Utube videos you will see just how stable they are when he leans  against the pole and it is totally rigid. As for the weight making it difficult to feed the awning through the channel you can remove side and/or front panels until after inflation. If you are worried about tubes being affected by sun heat you can lower the tube pressure down. Kampa show the effects of various temperature increases and all go nowhere near the maximum the tubes can withstand. We have two awnings both by Kampa, one since 2013 and are delighted with them.

Hi thanks for your answer regarding Kampa air awnings . You have put our mind at ease a little as we are doing our first seasonal next year with a Kampa 330 . We was unsure if we had to have a pole awning . I just wondered if you have had any issues with leaks in the Kampa s as we seem to have quite a few and only a year old

many thanks

I think leaving an awning up might depend on where your seasonal pitch is located. I was camping up on Hexham Racecourse a few years ago, and one night had a big storm. We were fine in our low tent, pitched up behind a sheltered hedge, but the devastation to the caravans was a sight to behold. There wasn’t an awning left up, and lots of damage to vans. Staff had tried to contact seasonal pitch users, but many obviously didn’t make it. It might be ok for a couple of nights to leave one up, but beyond that, careful check on weather situation.

I thought that on CMC sites that awnings had to generally be taken down at the end of a visit

9.7 You can put up an awning/tent, but
for safety purposes this should be
taken down when you leave the Site
at the end of each visit. This includes
other temporary structures, e.g. TV
aerials. Fire safety spacing must be
maintained (see Club Site Rules for
details). At Modbury only, awnings
do not need to be taken down at the
end of each visit, subject to specific
conditions which will be notified
separately.
9.8 Groundsheets and side flaps of tents
and awnings should be raised at
regular intervals and/or as requested
by the Site Staff to maintain the
condition of the pitch.

No idea ET, Hexham isn’t Club. Lots of seasonal pitches up there when we visited at time of incident. I wandered over to see a member of staff at the time, he said that users were informed to take them down, but a lot ignored the advice, he’d done his best phone round, but the majority still left them up. It’s very exposed is Hexham.

Not sure if St Agnes has seasonal pitches, there have been a few awnings over cliffs there in storms. We never left our awning up when we left our van in Cornwall, too risky. Besides, owners could mow grass easier with it down.
