Many people go down the west coast lowlands In winter to avoid the possible risk of bad weather on the higher parts of the Massif Central. On that western route sites in France which are open include those at Rennes, Nantes,Fouras, Bordeaux and Urrugne - but Google will tell you of others. Take care.

Close to the Spanish border at Urrugne,  strongly recommend Camping Larrouleta

A firm favorite for those en-route to and from Spain, open all year ,family owned and run, hard standings close (but not too) to the motorway and close to a LeClerc supermarket .

Second that (it's the site to which I made reference above but omitted to name). We use it in preference to an Aire as it is so welcoming, especially after a long drive in Winter. In fact, we see signs that people are settling in for a longer stay than just o/n  - awning up etc. Heated, covered pool is usually open and sometimes the site restaurant at weekends.

it also depends where in Spain youre heading...

our first 'stop' is Benicassim (I'm having a coffee an hour away at the mo...) and we sail to Cherbourg, 4 hrs ish to Nantes and then yesterday 6 hrs to Irun. Overnight there, on the road at 8 this morning then Pamplona, lunch stop, Zaragosa, Teruel, coffee, then down into Benicassim.

if coming from Calais, I might not choose the same route.

Plan B. For the all motorway route straight down the Rhone valley sites which are open include ones at  Paris, Lyon, Tournon, Avignon, Nimes and Narbonne. So many options in fact.

When we travel to Spain from Calais in January we take an early crossing and spend the first night at Poitiers (site; Aire nearby); second night  at the border (site open at Urrugne; Aire at Irun). We use the autoroute as we just want to make fast progress.

With short breaks, and sharing the driving, we usually arrive at the overnight stops around 4pm (ish) after a 7am (ish) crossing, and after leaving Poitiers around 9am.

There are also sites open at Tours and Bordeaux (two) if you are not making good time.

If you are crossing late, then the Aire at Le Crotoy would get you off to a good start the next morning.

I guess that works with shared driving but no way I could do it by myself. Perhaps if I was 30 years younger! Of course, it depends how far you are from the channel ports but it is very tiring to get to the ferry followed by a further two or three days of long drives.  which ferry are you thinking of and where in Spain are you heading to?
