Perfect for visiting Hylands Park and Writtle Chelmsford

We stayed on a hardstanding pitch, the field is closed at this time of year as its soaked and we knew that before arrival. We had a nice slightly elevated hard standing pitch and pitched so we had a lovely view of the fields, sheep and trees. There's industrial units or farm buildings behind which aren't quite as pretty but that's OK, just don't look that way. There was no disturbance from any of that, in fact we were the only ones on the CL (there looked to be 3 seasonal pitches in an area behind us but no one was there). You can hear the road occasionally as mentioned in another review but it was absolutely not a bother, just passing traffic. Toilets and a shower and wash station are an absolute bonus. We didn't use the shower but the toilets were great. We met Jenny shortly after arrival and she was lovely, popped over straight away after a quick phone call and sorted us out. Electric is now charged separately, we stayed 2 nights, 3 days and spent about ÂŁ4 a day for a rough guide. We'd particularly chosen this site to visit Hylands Park as you can walk there from the site (a little bit of road walking to get to the footpath) but we had torrential rain all night and half the morning beforehand so in the end drove there (literally 5 mins) once at Hylands Park there are lots of paths to walk that are paved or rough gravel which was great as it made for good walking. Writtle is a 5 min drive away and although tiny its pretty and worth a visit and we saw there was a cycleway into Chelmsford that only takes 15 mins apparently so another stay we may make a day and walk that as imagine it will follow the river Cam in parts. We'd like to come back and stay again when hopefully the field will be open and dry and we can do the walk we'd planned :D.

Weekend Stay

We stayed at Bumpstead’s Cottage CL for 2 nights following lockdown. Access is very easy from either the A12 or A414 although you need to look our for the C&MHC sign otherwise you’ll miss it. It’s a big field for only 5 pitches so you won’t feel hemmed in. The toilet and shower facilities are a credit for this CL, really clean. There’s a bit of noise from the road outside but only from the boy racers. Hylands Parks is only 5 minutes drive away and Chelmsford with all the amenities of a city 10 minutes away.

Lovely Visit

I came to Essex to visit a friend and this was the nearest CL. Easy to find although it could do with a sign as you come round the bed to show that its on the right as it’s not easy to see. I went straight past and luckily there was a roundabout not too far up the road to go round to get back. There were a few other caravans and Motorhomes there. The view of the cows in the field behind was lovely and it was a bonus to have toilets and showers on site. We didn’t use the shower but the toilets were clean and new looking. Sadly, when I went into the left toilet yesterday there were some burn marks on the plastic top of the toilet and a cigarette in the toilet. Not sure if the burns were already there and it was a coincidence about the cigarette but whatever happened it was an awful thing for someone to have done when the toilets look new. Didn’t see the owners as expected but left a cheque with my name on in the letterbox. Would visit again if in the area.

Essex is worth a visit

Graham and Jenny are a great couple and made us feel very welcome. The site was easy to find and in a great location for exploring Essex countryside and Chelmsford. We loved our two weeks stay. We biked into Chelmsford several times from the site along the river via Writtle. We found plenty of countryside walking around the area with plenty of wildlife to be seen too, with a Hare visiting the site most evenings and a Little Owl making its home in one of the trees on site. We enjoyed the area...Well done Essex

Close to Highlands Park

Site very close to Highlands Park which was great for us. They had EHU and Water and usual chem disposal points but the site wasn't very level - slanted down to a stream, although we were spaced out enough that we could move our vans to whichever angle made us level. Unfortunately, we went after about a month of rain which left the site very boggy our fault as we put our van at the bottom of the site nearest the tiny stream as there were lovely trees to shade our two dogs. My son and dogs loved exploring the site, esp the stream. It's a shame that most of England just couldn't seem to get rid of the surface water. So I am looking forward to going back when I didn't have to wear wellies to leave the van. The water taps were nice and high so great if you're like me and have a bad back. There is a small industrial site next door which you occasionally hear them banging around. Never saw the owners but you just put the money through a letterbox. Shame the site in on a bend which, if you miss it, it's miles before you can turn your van around. Definately going back though as it's close to family and Highlands park.

Overbooked

Despite booking well in advance, we were put outside the site on an adjoining field. Site quite industrial and a disappointment.

only stay when its dry !!

We stayed at this site for one night in July 2012 to attend the Chelmsford Beer Fest. peaceful location and nice surroundings, however that evening it poured down with rain, us and another couple who were staying in a caravan got stuck. it took us 6 hrs to get out as the recovery vehicle could not reverse onto the grass area to tow us as it was too sodden.
